Coucillor Arrested For Insulting President Mugabe - Read Why

It may now be very risky to insult Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on social media.

That's because a man has been arrested for posting abusive messages on WhatsApp against the President.

Nduna Matshazi, a councillor for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, says he sent a message about President Mugabe by mistake.

Nduna said the message was intended for a political chat group, but was posted by mistake to a group of councillors for the rural district of Bubi in Southern Zimbabwe, the group administrator reported him to the police and led to his arrest.

Insult laws were declared unconstitutional in Zimbabwe by the constitutional court in 2013, but the then Justice minister said it was necessary to keep Zimbabweans in check.
