To Fill Senatorial Seat, INEC Has Conducted a By-election In Borno

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has conducted a by-election in Borno State, north-east Nigeria, to fill the vacant Central Senatorial seat. Senator Khalifa Ahmed, elected to represent the zone, died in April.

The All Progressives Congress, KOWA Party and the Peoples Democratic Party have each fielded candidates in the by-election.

Six out of the eight local governments that constitute the Central Senatorial zone of Borno State have, in the heat of terrorism, been sacked from their original homes and now live in makeshift camps within Maiduguri.

They are Bama, Mafa, Kalabalge, Ngala, Dikwa and Konduga local governments.

Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and Jere Local Government are observing the elections in their original registered units.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Usman Durkwa, is hopeful of a successful conduct of the election considering the enthusiasm displayed especially by people living in makeshift camps.

“Remember Us”

The Internally Displaced men, women and youths living in the host community with relatives trekked long distances to exercise their rights, as a backlash to the traditional banning of vehicular movement for the period of the election.

They were keen on participating in electing who will represent them in the Eighth National Assembly, considering their peculiar needs as explained by Banna Juddum, a voter dislodged from Bama local council as a result of the Boko Haram attacks.

“I am a displaced person from Bama, everyone knows what happened to our town. We are suffering and we have lost all we ever had all the people you see from Bama today are penniless both the poor and rich.

“We don’t have roads or bridges. Whoever wins should remember us and our jobless children,” Juddum pleaded.

Officials of the INEC on duty appeared to have put their acts together, as explained by Ali Kashim and evident in the free flow of the exercise.

Governor Kashim Shettima urged the people of the state to embrace peaceful conducts while advising the eventual loser to be gallant in defeat.

The eventual winner will join Senators Ali Ndume and Abu Kyari currently representing the northern and southern zones of the state at the Eight National Assembly.
