Four separate panels of
the Rivers State National and State Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal
sitting in Abuja have nullified the election of the Speaker of the Rivers State
House of Assembly, Owaji Ibani and 19 others elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in the April 11, 2015
elections.
Other constituencies
where PDP candidates’ elections were nullified are Gokana, Eleme, Obio-Akpor I
and II, Eleme, Etche II, Opobo-Nkoro, Akukutoru I and II, Asari Toru – and II,
Bonny, Tai, ONELGA I, Degema, Khana Iand II, Port Harcourt II and Ikwerre.
The Tribunals ordered
fresh elections to be conducted in the 20 constituencies.
The Tribunals, however,
upheld elections in 11 constituencies, which are Oyigbo, Etche I, Omuma,
Ogu-Bolo, Port Harcourt I and III, ONELGa II, Abua-Odua, Ahoada West, Ahoada
East II and Emuoha.
On October 24, the
Tribunal handling the governorship election petition annulled the victory of
Nyesom Wike as the Governor of the state and ordered fresh poll within 90 days.
Governor Wike contested
in the governorship election of April 11 on the platform of the PDP.
After the verdict on
Saturday, Mr Wike said he would appeal the ruling.
The PDP has expressed
worries over the verdicts of the Tribunals, summoning an emergency meeting of
its national caucus to discuss what it calls “onslaught against the party and
its candidates in the last general elections, by the All Progressives
Congress-led Federal Government”.
In a statement on
Monday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said that the caucus
would meet on Thursday, October 29.
