The National Food and
Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) has sealed a Chinese Company in Kano for
producing a fake and unregistered insecticide, named ‘Wave Tide Mosquito coil’.
The company, Plant
Fibre Mosquito Coil, is located on No.49, Maisikeli Road Nasarawa local
government area of the ancient city, according to a release issued and signed
by Mr. Anslem Okonkwor of the agency’s public relations unit.
Chief Regulatory
Officer with the Investigation and Enforcement directorate of NAFDAC Lagos, Mr.
Paul Akeh, who led the operation made the disclosure while addressing newsmen
shortly after closing the factory.
Akeh disclosed that
following intelligence reports, the agency officials had visited the company on
September 28 where they discovered some violations and directed the company to
come to Lagos for the purpose of regularising their registration processes with
the agency, but the management failed to show up, hence the decision to close
place.
He said the agency also
found it necessary to shut the factory since it cannot guarantee the efficacy
and safety of its product. “Since the company is not registered by NAFDAC, the
safety of its products is not ascertained or guaranteed. The finished products
are bearing Chinese address while they are being produced in Nigeria”, he said.
According to him, the
chemicals used for production were imported from China and labeled in Chinese
language which is against the labelling requirements of the agency. “They
import the untreated coils and pass them through their machines to put the
chemicals”, he added.
He therefore called on
members of the public to stop buying and using the ‘Wave Tide Mosquito Coil’ in
view of the fact that the agency was yet to ascertain the safety of the
chemicals used in the product.
He said all the
finished products would be evacuated from the factory while the place would
remain closed until investigation was completed. He assured that the products
which are illegally in circulation would be mopped up.
