Zimbabwe Parliament has come up with a law to stop a Court ruling which gave employers of labor in the country powers to sack workers randomly without any compensation.
Zimbabwe Supreme Court had about three weeks ago ruled that due to the economic meltdown workers can be retrenched without compensation, a decision which led to over 20 000 jobs loss as firms embarked on retrenching workers en mass.
But the country’s biggest labour organisation, Zimbabwe Congress Trade Union, ZCTU said the legislation will not change anything as it still favour the employers. ZCTU said more workers would still be sacked because most companies are unable to survive in the crumbling economy.
Unemployment rate in Zimbabwe is currently pegged at more than 90%.
Zimbabwe economists say, unless something drastic happens, 2015 will be another year of economic decline associated with the collapse of social institutions and further reduction in the delivery of essential services to the population.
